Robert and I were exchanging thoughts about the life of Edith Piaf and
the similarities to contemporary female performers today in terms of
excess and self-destruction. There is an energy field at work and I
think that the chaos is attracted to a person and to their work. It isn't
a simple matter. It opens the door to the idea that a great artist or even
an effective media icon is a type of sacrifice. A very romantic and
even self indulgent notion but one that I have observed and come face to
face with in my own life. I could name several magnificent women I have
met in the performance field who live their own version of Edith Piaf's
world. The thing I will admit to despising within my own life is uninvited
criticism. When anyone give unsolicited criticism, it is an affront and
a hostile act.
Sometimes it is a wake-up call and sometimes it is a call to arms and
sometimes it tells you who and what to avoid.
