01:00 AM
As I write this, the owl is hooting outside my window. I can hear the
crickets in a relaxed rhythm. And the most beautiful thing of all is the
silence of a night with no rain. Last night after I wrote the entry here,
the rain became progressively worse. It came in torrents with thunder and
lightning. It was extremely hard and then it would become harder. As it has
now been raining every day for a week, I have grown weary of the sound of
rain and the moisture everywhere I am. Water. Water. Water. At 5 AM this
morning, I went downstairs to find a stream flowing though the basement
from one wall to the outside wall. There was also a pool of standing water.
I spent several hours wading in it and moving everything I could manage up
the stairs to higher and dry ground. It was impossible to sleep during
such hard rain. I kept getting up and checking the ceilings for any leaks
and turning on the light to look downstairs.
The air felt musky and I was reminded of mildew and old funky houses I
lived in when I went to college and how they always had a stale air quality
to them. Even though today my sense of smell is pretty much non-existent
after my accident in 2001 where I sustained a fractured skull and lost my
sense of smell and taste, I can still "sense" certain air qualities. This
water smell is one of those.
The weather report is saying rain for another week. I hope they are wrong.
I've had enough. I'm exhausted.
