"MAHAKALI", ( Kali is the feminine of "kala"- "darkness", Maha is "great" ) is named after the mythical indian goddess of death and destruction, as mentioned in the Mahabarata and other indian epics.
The goddess of destruction, creation, time, change...This theme of respect/reverence for strength and simultaneous repulsion/fear of power runs through the album. Kali's narrative also discusses Nietzsche's adage that 'in fighting the monster, one must be careful that one does not become the monster.'
Jarboe' signature voice reveals numerous "characters". Listeners will also hear avant rock, referential epic-era Swans, ambient - fields, and orchestral instrumentation. In her characteristic collaborative method, the all-star line-up includes special vocal contributions by Philip Anselmo (Down, Pantera) and Attila Csihar (Mayhem,Sunn O))). This album features fine instrumental work by a variety of players from Kris Force ( Amber Asylum), Josh Graham (Red Sparrowes, Storm of Light), Vinny Signorelli ( Swans, Unsane ) and Julia Kent(Antony & The Johnsons). The series also includes raw atmospheric spoken word collaborations with Cedric Victor.
This website is the ONLY source for the entirety of the Goddess Of Change & Destruction series, from the Mahakali trinity to Dark Consort to the continuing web-only series : Durga, Daksinakali, Ugra... All fragments come signed by Jarboe.Each of the 3 Mahakali cds (US digipak, US jewel case, EU digipak) contain the core album, however each version contains essential additional full tracks and bonus material that will vary from one release version to the other.
An accompaniment to the release, DARK CONSORT is part of the Pandora's Box set which is encased in a folding black box.
The MAHAKALI releases all feature a minimum of 15 tracks per release, some of which are unique to that release. Included in this sampling are some of the pieces from each release as well as tracks from the website-only DARK CONSORT album.

Each of the Mahakali releases features unique material in addition to the 12 or so tracks. The bonus pieces are a way of changing/coloring the narrative, giving the listener more access to different voices and ideas. One of the challenges with a project this extensive was trying to fit everything into one CD or even two, which we couldn't do for a number of reasons. Thus, Dark Consort.
DARK CONSORT is a companion cd of essential experimental material.
