Last night I ran for 7 miles in a heavy fog. It was dark on the path and runners who came towards me were only visible as they approached from several feet away. We passed in silence and mutual honor. I run at night to be alone and/or to commune in spirit with the clan of serious runners. Serious runners don’t have time for socializing and smiles of no threat. They run for the challenge, the personal endurance, the night air . . . the MEDITATION.
