Compassion does not mean foolish martyrdom. Nor does it mean a slavish adulation to putting others’ needs before your own. That type of compassion is a weakness upon which others will prey. Choosing one’s battles does NOT mean choosing a weak self-indulgent state of seeking revenge. I just saw an excellent and stimulating spiritual work of art in the guise of a comic book turned Hollywood movie that embraces both the question, fable, and state of Compassion and Battle. Batman Begins is absolutely profound. “Training is nothing. The WILL is everything” is the second most profound message in the film. The first is what Batman says in the climactic scene : ” I won’t destroy you. But that doesn’t mean I have to save you, either.” ***
