When I tried to sleep in the early hours Monday, I kept seeing waves of water….a veritable ocean of water flooding the Quarter where I had played as a child. New Orleans is the birthplace of my mother and grandmother. It is where my grandparents were wed. It is the place of family graves and where my Great Aunt was one of the first to have Doctor by her name. The Aunt who was a patron of the arts, the opera, the theatre. ( Meanwhile another Great Aunt was a singer and dancer on Broadway in NYC at that time.) But in New Orleans, as a little child, I first saw street performers tap dance upon boxes on the sidewalk for coins tossed into upturned hats. In New Orleans, I observed musicians and singers in amazing harmonies … and the possibilities of music excited my heart. I love New Orleans. It is home.
